Heyy Babyy Movie Review

Sajid Khan’s debut film as a director, Heyy Babyy hits the screen this week. Known for his stand up comedy shows, one surely expects some serious dose of laughter from Sajid’s film. So will Sajid Khan’s debut venture be a comical gem or will it fall into the category of films that will be promoted with full blast but will fizzle out once they release. Read on to know….

Heyy Baby Movie Story

Arush (Akshay Kumar), Al (Fardeen Khan), and Tanmay (Ritiesh Deshmukh) three close buddies are Sydney’s biggest casanova’s. Their life suddenly takes a turn for the good when a baby is left at their doorstep. Initiallly perturbed by the baby’s presence, they finally start developing love for the cute angelic baby. And when the three men and their baby were living all cosy and happy, the baby’s real mother ( Vidya Balan) turns up and snatches the baby from them. How they redeem the baby and win Vidya’s heart forms the crux of the film.

Heyy Babyy Review

First thing’s first. Is Heyy Baby a copy of Three Men And A Baby? As Sajid Khan said in an interview, “Heyy Babyy is as similar to Three Men And A Baby as much as Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. is similar to Patch Adams.” So is that statement true? It’s Absolutely True.

But is Heyy Babyy as refreshing a comedy as Three Men And A Baby? Sorry, the answer is a BIG NO. With Heyy Babyy Sajid resorts to the same cliches, abundant hamming and crass humor that he so badly condemned on his comedy shows. And that is what is a major disappointment.

Heyy Babyy Review

If Sajid would have resorted to situational humor other than those abundant volleys of toilet humor, then Heyy Babyy would have been a funny journey. But the humor, though silly, does make you laugh. And the credit for that goes to Ritesh and Akshay’s classic comic timing and their animated expressions.

Another disappointment in the movie is the unoriginal screenplay and the abysmal editing. The flow of the movie is also not smooth. It’s a humpety dumpety ride all along. You have some good comic momentum going on and then suddenly there is a dose of emotional drama. Now this is seriously difficult to digest and leads to constipated effect.

Now of the star cast, Akshay Kumar and Ritesh Deshmukh are the pillars that hold Heyy Baby. Fardeen Khan though no match to Akshay and Ritesh, gives a competent performance. Of the rest of the cast, Boman Irani hams big time while Vidya Balan disappoints big time with her dampened, stiff as wood performance. And yes, how can you forget the cute angelic baby, who was a major contribution to most of my laughs. The baby is clever enough to understand the goofs in the film. She laughs at the stupidity of some scenes, cries when she realises the banality in the film’s screenplay / editing and gapes with disbelief at some cliched scenes.

One high point of Heyy Babyy is the great choreography by sis, Farah Khan and the hip hop music by Shankar Ehsan Loy. Surely the title track( Heyy Baby) and Mast Kalandar ( where SRK makes an appearance) are going to have the audience hooting and whistling along.

Sajid Khan adds his comic touch in some scenes and you can make out it was he who was behind the camera. Like the one with Fardeen and Vidya in the car or the scenes when the three men try to come in terms with the baby’s presence in their life are sure to make you laugh hard. But some of the scenes are so cliched, that you wonder, “Was it really Sajid who made this film.” Sajid you are not a bad director, just practising what you preached in your comedy shows, will make you sail the ship through, next time round.

I always had a concern that Sajid in order to please all the audience’s will be like the Dhoobi Ka Kutta, Na Ghar Ka Na Ghaat Ka. And that is exactly what happens with Heyy Babyy. He tries romance, emotions and comedy. And the mixed bhaji that he creates is not tasty. Yes, you might savor some parts of it. But in entirety Heyy Babyy disappoints.

All said and done if you like lavish sets, great music , stupid jokes, great choreoghraphy and cute babies. Then Heyy Babyy could well be a timepass flick.

Final verdict : Is Kahani Mein Romance Hain, Masti Hain, Comedy Hain, Emotion Hai. Par Mazaa Nahi Aaya.

Movie Rating : 5/10
P.S. : If you have not caught up with Three Men and A Baby ( Heyy Baby’s english version), then rent a dvd and watch this 1980′s flick. Surely you will be satisfied.
