Video : Amar Singh Gets Candid on Ash-Abhi wedding….

The Aishwarya-Abhishek wedding has led to guessing games over whose invited and whose not. There have even been suggestions that the guest list was determined by rival camps within the film industry and in political circles also. So, who better to answer all those questions, than the Bachchans’ best man and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.

Rajdeep Sardesai: There are many who are saying that the Aishwarya-Abhishek wedding as become a political one. That all your political rivals have not been invited by the Bachchans.

Amar Singh: This is a very disgusting question

Rajdeep Sardesai: This question is being asked because Sonia Gandhi and the Gandhi family were very close to the Bachchans. The feeling is that after you fell out, in a sense, with Sonia Gandhi it’s become impossible for the Bachchans to invite the Gandhis.

Amar Singh: This is absolute nonsense. I have got nothing to do with all this. I am there as part of the family and whom to invite or not is their choice.

Rajdeep Sardesai: So, this was a prerogative of the Bachchans to not invite the Gandhi family?

Amar Singh: I will not say anything because this is a personal affair. And I will humbly suggest that please respect privacy and the decisions of individuals and their family.

Rajdeep Sardesai: Quite uniquely the Bachchans have made sure that this hasn’t become a seven-day event like the Liz Hurley-Arun Nayar wedding. You are right that they have managed to retain an element of privacy but can you really remain private when you are the number one star in the film industry? Can such a wedding ever remain private?

Amar Singh: It has remained private. The media has gone bananas over it but they have not been able to report anything correct. There has been speculation over the last three months. Somebody said they (Aishwarya-Abhishek) will marry in Jodhpur, while others said Ambey Valley and Gwalior. I recently went to a music shop and they said that some singer from Banaras, who is likely to sing in the wedding, has come out with his CDs. So, then I called him and asked why he is doing such things when he is not invited.

Rajdeep Sardesai: So, a conscious decision to keep it a family affair?

Amar Singh: Yes, 100 per cent. It’s a personal affair and nobody from the media is invited.

Rajdeep Sardesai: If some people call the entire affair a media tamasha then you blame the media for it? The Bachchans or Amar Singh never tried to make it into a public event?

Amar Singh: Am I encouraging you to talk about the wedding? It’s you who is asking.

Rajdeep Sardesai: So, it’s not a wedding designed to show the power of the Bachchans in Bollywood, Amar Singh in politics or Anil Ambani in industry?

Amar Singh: Absolutely not. People like Mr Bachchan’s make-up man Deepak Sawant, his valet Pravin and all the servants in the family have been given invitation cards personally. The glitterati is missing in this wedding and it shows it is for the people and by the people whom the Bachchans care about. Political, corporate and social status is not the criteria.

Rajdeep Sardesai: There are polls going in Uttar Pradesh. Many believe this is a battle of life and death for the Samajwadi Party and yet you are not in Lucknow but in Mumbai at the wedding. Misplaced priorities?

Amar Singh: No, not at all. Family comes first and for me it’s not a glam wedding. I would have loved to spend at least 15 days for this wedding but I have given only four days. This is the minimum I could do. Even Mulayam Singhji, the captain for our team, will be coming for the wedding. So, this wedding I couldn’t have missed.

Rajdeep Sardesai: But the wedding has been built over a number of days. There was a highly-publicised visit to Banaras, Mirzapur and then the wedding in Mumbai. It’s been a bit of an event, would you agree?

Amar Singh: No, this is not an event. If our going to a temple becomes an event, if people follow us or journalists go bananas then it’s not our problem. We are also human, we can go wherever we want. Why are you wasting your time and energy on us? Please leave us alone.

Rajdeep Sardesai: Amar Singhji thank you for talking to us.

Amar Singh: Thank you.
