Vidhya Balan—-”We’re all a little scared of Mr Chopra…”

Filed under: Interviews with Bollywood Stars - 19 Feb 2007

Every actor from Amitabh Bachchan to Akshay Kumar is wooed by her picture-perfect looks. Every director is won over by her talent. Vidya Balan today is in an enviable position where she can pick and choose. She’s even been turning down internationally- acclaimed makers like Mira Nair, her long-time mentor Pradeep Sarkar and wonder of wonders, the Yash Raj banner, not once but twice.

Reason…date problems. It was certainly time to pin down the lovely lady who’s just returned from a Hey Baby! shoot in Australia. Excerpts from an interview:

What did you like best about Australia?

Well, it was my first outdoors abroad and I enjoyed the freedom that anonymity brings. It’s not that I don’t like meeting fans. Even in Sydney I had people coming up to me for a chat and an autograph. But for the last two years I haven’t been able to go out on long walks. That’s a luxury I enjoyed while shooting for Hey Baby!.

So it was a quiet shoot?

On the contrary, it was a madhouse out there. When Sajid (Khan) and Akshay (Kumar) get together it’s a lethal combo. And then there was Riteish (Deshmukh) too. Together, they would all gang up and play pranks on me. Occasionally, I’d get one back. We had a blast.

Will the film be as much fun?

I’d hope so. It has great comedy that’ll have you rolling over with helpless laughter. And moments that will drive you to tears.

Will we see a more glam-glam Vidya?

Oh, definitely.

A la Preity Zinta in Salaam Namaste?

Just because it’s set in Australia doesn’t necessarily mean that this film is comparable to a Salaam Namaste or a Dil Chahta Hai. Sydney doesn’t have a particular dress code, you know. My on-screen wardrobe is my own, designed by Manish Malhotra.

Online Piracy makes the Bollywood industry bleed

Filed under: Bollywood News - 19 Feb 2007

Pirated movies on the Internet are the latest nightmare for distributors and financiers. The Rs 3,000-crore Hindi film industry loses nearly Rs 1,000 crore annually to piracy, according to studies by the Television and Film Producers Guild of India and Yes Bank.

With over 30 million users at any point of time, the Internet has emerged as the new pirate domain, making a film available for download within hours of its release at a minimal or often no fee.

The recent release Black Friday has been available online for download for the past one year, apart from being available at pirate vendors on streets and near railway stations.

Mira Nair’s Water, slated for release on 9 March in India, has also been up for download on the Internet for a while now. Recent films like Dhoom:2, Jaan-E-Mann, Baabul, Bhagam Bhag, Anwar, Traffic Signal, Salaam-e-Ishq and Guru are all available online for download at no cost.

Jiah KhanIs Jiah Khan your real name?

No, my name’s Nafisa. Jiah’s sexier. I got it from the Angelina movie Gia… I changed it a bit to sound more exciting as it Ji….aah.Okay, so how did a London girl get here?I’m New York-born, brought up in London. Chelsea, you know. I was wild about the Bombay movies. As a kid I’d wear salwaar kameez and drive my teachers mad by speaking in Hindi. Then I hopped back to New York to study acting at Lee Strasberg. I quit because I got a role here. They said, “Go! You have a life membership at the school anyway.” I was so inspired by Rangeela.

You’re plugging Ram Gopal Varma?

Seriously. I have a video of me dancing like Urmila (Matondkar) with my two younger sisters… We have different fathers… they’re as beautiful as I am, if not more.

Jiah and AmitabhGreat! Who is your father?

I attach very little importance to my father. He’s an American Indian Muslim. He left my mother when I was three months old. I know his name – Ali Rizvi Khan – I even know where he lives in New York. He has never bothered to meet me, neither have I.
That would have hurt if he had left at an age when I even knew how l-i-f-e is spelt. I don’t have any memory of what he looks like… but it does bother me that I still have his name on my passport.

You never wanted to meet him in New York?
The thought did cross my mind… when I was a bit bored…
