Is Cheeni Kum another Nishabd ?

 If Nishabd had you wondering, can any romance brew between a 18 year old woman and a 60 year old man? Then think again, because we have another movie(Cheeni Kum) dealing with the same concept albeit in a different manner. The actors in question are Tabu and Amitabh Bachchan. But Cheeni Kum appears to be more of a romantic comedy than a serious film ala Nishabd.

Amitabh must consider himself lucky for getting such wonderful roles as such an age. Surely there is no lack of “Cheeni” (sugar) in his wonderful career.

The Storyline

‘Cheeni Kum’ has Tabu playing a tourist in London. As the movie’s story goes, one day Tabu goes to an Indian restaurant for a meal along with a friend of hers. But she is not happy with the meal she is served. She complains to the waiter. The complaint doesn’t go well with the restaurant’s chef (Amitabh) who is a perfectionist. To placate the complaining customer, the chef fires the steward. This incident marks the beginning of a relationship between the chef and the young woman.

Director’s Say

Director, Balkrishnan describes the film as “a sarcastic love story between the two characters played by Amitji and Tabu.” He says the reason he calls it a sarcastic love story is because “it suits the sarcasm, the coldness, the warmth and a certain kind of humour – you know those who have interacted with Amitji for some time would know what it is — I call it the Amitabh Bachchan way which I have tried to capture in the film.” As for Tabu “She is one of the fantastic actresses we have today and teaming her with Amitji for the first time seemed a great idea.”

 

 

Cheeni Kum Film Trivia

The movie has been directed by advertising genius Balkrishnan who has like 1500 ad films to his credit.

The movie has  Amitabh sporting a pony tail for the first time ever in his career.

Ilayaraja has composed the music and P C Shriram, who’s shot most of Mani Ratnam’s films is the cameraman.

Paresh Rawal and Zora Sehgal play the other two key characters in the film.

So you guys and gals interested in seeing this film ? Surely the trailer must have made you realise that Nishabd and Cheeni Kum may have the same basic story but are as different as “chalk and cheese”
